Police Rescue Man Who Had Legs Severed In Construction Accident

The man was hit by a large steel plate, which knocked him into a 10-foot-deep hole and severed both his legs, police say.

Nassau County police officers were able to rescue a man who had both of his legs severed in an accident at a construction site in Roslyn Heights Wednesday morning.

According to police, while working on the site near Corncrib Lane and Locust Lane, a 39-year-old man was struck by a large steel plate just after 8 a.m. The impact threw the man down a hole about 10 feet deep, and also severed both of his legs below the knee.

Officers were called to the scene and were able to get down the hole to put tourniquets on the man's legs to control the bleeding. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition.
