Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. A delayed start due to the rain did not dampen the enthusiasm and pride of marchers and onlookers at Mineola's 2022 Portugal Day Parade on Sunday. Returning after a two-year hiatus during the pandemic, the beloved village tradition was back in full force with lavish, colorful floats, folk dancers, marching bands and honorary parade marshals including senate candidate (and former Mineola mayor) Jack Martins and current Mineola mayor Paul Pereira. (Village of Mineola)
  2. Crowds also gathered in Mineola on a more serious note, rallying to stop gun violence as part of a day of nationwide protests on Saturday. Participants of the "March for Our Lives" and "Moms Demand Action" groups started at the Nassau County Supreme Court and made their way to the Executive and Legislative building at 1550 Franklin Ave. to demand stricter gun laws, including banning ghost guns and passing the red flag law. (News12 Long Island)
  3. If you didn't already receive an unexpected check from New York State, you may soon. New York State is automatically sending substantial tax rebate checks to homeowners making $250,000 a year or less to ease the burden of property taxes, starting this month into July. You can check the requirements and find out how much you should receive here. (Patch)
