Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- Due to the rise in addiction since the pandemic started and the spread of fentanyl — which most users consume unknowingly — some bar and restaurant owners are putting fentanyl testing strips in their public bathrooms to help save lives. Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, president and chief executive officer of the Family and Children's Association in Mineola, championed the idea. "It's critical. They need to be everywhere, along with Naloxone kits and prevention messages." (Patch)
- An app called Too Good to Go is helping to sell surplus food from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown out to consumers at discount prices. Taglio Pizza at 85 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola was recently selling a "surprise bag" of three specialty slices that would normally cost $17 for $4.99. Co-owner Domenico Tolomeo said his discounted slices are a hit on the app and regularly sell out. "So, it helps us, and it also helps people who have food insecurities and maybe don't have enough money to spend on a $30 pie or $4 slice." (Newsday)
- Keira Talty of Mineola High School was a 2022 finalist at the 60th National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) competition held in-person on April 23 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Talty was a second place Poster Presenter in the Mathematics & Computer Science category in this premier showcase for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research by high school students. This money goes directly to the youth, to offset the financial strain caused by the pandemic." (Facebook)
