Trees guard the forests and the sanctified places that must not be spoiled.

Trees watch over us and provide us with what we need to live on this planet.

Trees provide a focal point for meditation, enlightenment, guidance and inspiration.

Trees have a soul and a spirit.”

Tree Magick by Lavenderwater

Such truth in these words, yet healthy trees are needlessly being cut down on Foch Blvd in Mineola with the rationale being that they are sick and in the way an ongoing roadwork project. Similar work is being done in neighboring towns without removing beautiful old trees that provide a natural canopy. Several residents have returned home from work to discover lovely healthy trees shading their homes from”the dog days “ of summer have been cut down without any notice.

Chanel 12 news covered this in an on air segment and yet the destruction continues.. The town has promised to plant new trees in three years. I will put it simply, government, local and otherwise, is entrusted to act for the common good. There is absolutely no popular consensus for cutting down trees . There has been no offer of a meeting of the minds in the face of outrage thus the continuation creates a real failure on government and elected officials to meet the real needs of its constituents.

There is no doubt that road work is needed, but at what price glory ? Whether or not one believes in global warming, I will bring this down to the fact that I walk my dogs down these streets and pause for the shade that these leafy giants provide. My dogs bark at the squirrels and birds above out heads. Besides increasing energy costs to homes which have already lost the protection from the sun, it sad that we will soon be breathing in more noxious fumes due to road work without the additional protection of the trees that not only shield our homes but produce healthier air. How can that be justified ?

Sincerely,

Randi Falow

Foch Blvd. Mineola, N.Y.
