NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The New York State Senate 7th district seat is up for grabs on Nov. 8 and a Republican challenger is looking to unseat an incumbent Democrat. Jack Martins of Mineola will face Anna Kaplan of Great Neck, who has represented the district since 2019, at the polls.

Jack Martins, 55, is the former mayor of Mineola who served in the State Senate from 2010 to 2016. According to his official senate biography, he describes himself as:

"A fiscal conservative who believes that cutting taxes and controlling spending are the best ways to grow the economy and create jobs."

Martins considers some of his major accomplishments during his three terms to be: "cutting middle class income tax rates to their lowest levels in 60 years; reducing business costs, including repealing the MTA payroll tax for small businesses and schools; delivering hundreds of millions of dollars for economic development on Long Island; enacting the two percent property tax cap; and passing six fiscally responsible state budgets."

Kaplan is a former child refugee from Iran who served on the North Hempstead town board before being elected to the State Senate. In 2018, she made the news for being the first New York State Senate candidate to be endorsed by former President Barack Obama.

Kaplan is the Senate Chair of Committee on Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business.

Kaplan's biography says that the former refugee has "devoted her life to public service as a way of giving back to the country that has given her so much. Now serving in her second term as a New York State Senator representing the 7th Senate District, including the Northwest portion of Nassau County, Anna is fighting hard for Long Island and delivering results for our community on important issues like funding our schools, middle class tax relief, women’s rights, and keeping our communities safe from gun violence and hate crimes."
