A swastika and anti-Semitic slurs were found written in a Nassau County Jewish center on Sunday morning, and police are investigating it as a bias incident.

According to police, the director of education of the Shelter Rock Jewish Center, located at 272 Shelter Rock Road in Searingtown, was walking down a stairwell Saturday morning when they noticed the swastika and anti-Semitic words drawn in black pen on a painting.

Police say the stairwell is not commonly used, and there is no time frame for when the drawings were made.

"In Nassau, an attack on one people is an attack on all people. And an attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement to Patch. "America was built on the ideal that people of different backgrounds can live and thrive together. We will not look away when we are confronted with bigotry in our backyard. The act of hatred on display at the Shelter Rock Jewish Center must be condemned loudly. There is no place for hatred anywhere in our county.”

Police ask anyone with information about the racist graffiti to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous, and you could receive a cash reward if your information leads to an arrest.
