In response to a growing need to address the various health and well-being issues impacting teens in our community, Winthrop-University Hospital will offer a two-part series for parents at 7 PM on Thursday, October 9 and Thursday, October 16. The series will address the sensitive issues surrounding both mental health and substance abuse. Parents are invited to attend one or both sessions at the Mineola Community Center, located at 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola (one block south of Jericho Turnpike), between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue.
Jane Swedler, MD, Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Winthrop, and Deepan Singh, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, will discuss “Teens & Mental Health” on Thursday, October 9 at 7 PM. They will provide an overview of common adolescent mental health issues, as well as information on prevention, symptom recognition and treatment. Topics will include depression, anxiety, bullying, and more.
“Teens & Substance Abuse” will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 7 PM. Drs. Swedler and Singh will be joined by Anthony Rizzuto, MSW, CASAC, from the Nassau County Heroin Task Force, to discuss teen substance abuse in Nassau County.
