Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A 41-year-old West Hempstead man, Damian Douglas, was arrested for abandoning his malnourished pet dog outside of Bobby and the Strays Animal Shelter in Freeport. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said from her office in Mineola that it was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty in Nassau County that they had witnessed. The defendant allegedly kept his pet in a crate outside on his property for at least eight months, where the dog became malnourished and suffered from muscle wasting and open sores. - An alert for LIRR commuters: two eastbound lines currently have service changes to and from the Mineola station. The 8:06 a.m. train from Jamaica to Oyster Bay will not be running until the end of this year, as bus service will be provided between Mineola and all stops along the Oyster Bay branch. Also, this week until Friday, Aug. 12 on the Port Jefferson line, eastbound trains will skip New Hyde Park and Merillon Avenue from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and go straight to Mineola, as buses will then take riders back to those two stations, according to the LIRR. - Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire just hosted a delayed graduation ceremony on Aug. 6 for the Class of 2020, and that includes Mineola resident Ariella Kovary. As a first-generation college graduate, Kovary was happy to finally mark the achievement in person and celebrate with her mother, whom she said deserved the honor just as much as she did for financing her education. Next month, Kovary will start her graduate studies in architecture and urban planning at Columbia University. (Valley News)
