Woman Steals $8K After Bank Withdrawal In Nassau: Police

A woman stole the money from another woman after offering to help her fix a flat tire, police say.

MINEOLA, NY — A woman stole $8,000 from another woman in Mineola after she withdrew the cash from a Carle Place bank on Monday afternoon, Nassau police said.

A woman withdrew $8,000 in cash from Chase Bank at 400 Old Country Road around 12:45 p.m. and returned to her vehicle, police said. She placed her wallet and the cash in her purse on the front passenger seat, and headed westbound on Old Country Road, police said. She drove a short distance before she heard a noise coming from her car and saw the low tire pressure light turn on, police said. She pulled the car over and saw her right back tire was flat with a large metal object sticking out from it, police said.

Then, a middle-aged woman with blonde hair who the driver did not know came up to her with a can of "Fix a Flat" and offered it to her, police said.

As the woman began using the can, she became suspicious of the woman’s behavior and realized her $8,000 was gone, police said. She saw the woman running away westbound on Old Country Road, police said.

Police are looking for the woman, who is wanted for grand larceny.

Detectives asked anyone with information regarding the theft to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.

"Police would like to remind residents to be cautious when using financial institutions and while making purchases," the department wrote. "Please be cognizant of your surroundings and aware of the increasing frequency of distraction larcenies."
