5 Trees That Thrive in Orange Lake's Wet Soils

Property around Orange Lake sits low. The soils stay saturated longer than most homeowners expect, and trees planted without that in mind tend to struggle or fail within a few years. The good news is that Orange County, NY — zone 6b — actually supports several native trees that were made for exactly these conditions.
What Actually Grows Well in Orange Lake's Saturated GroundRiver birch - handles wet, poorly drained soil better than almost any other tree in the region. Its root system tolerates standing water and its peeling bark makes it easy to identify as it matures.
Red maple - is one of the most common trees in this part of New York for a reason. It establishes quickly in moist soil and handles seasonal flooding without losing structural integrity. Watch for surface roots near driveways as it ages.
Black tupelo - (also called black gum) is underused on wet sites here. It tolerates poor drainage and offers some of the best fall color in the Hudson Valley.
Swamp white oak - is built for this. It handles saturated and clay-heavy soils, grows steadily, and lives long. It is a better fit for low spots near the water than any non-native oak you might consider.
Pin oak - is the most commonly planted wet-site oak in Orange County. It roots well in heavy soils and holds its canopy well through the wet winters this area gets.

The trees that struggle here are almost always the ones planted for looks without checking whether the soil gives them any chance. See here to read what other Orange County homeowners have said about working with us.
A tree planted in the right place takes care of itself. That is still the simplest truth in this work.
