16-Year-Old Arrested For Loaded Gun At High School: MVPD

Mount Vernon HS officials notified police that they had discovered a student in possession of a handgun, and that the student left campus.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A 16-year-old Mount Vernon student was arrested for having a loaded gun at Mount Vernon High School.

The teenage student is not being identified by officials.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, Mount Vernon High School officials notified police that they had discovered a student in possession of a handgun, and that the student left the school campus. MVPD quickly began to canvass the area near the high school for the student.

Officers spotted the student walking near Pennsylvania Ave. and California Rd. When approached, the student fled from officers, leading police on a brief foot chase. The student was apprehended nearby, in the rear yard of a residence on Sheridan Ave.

A loaded firearm was also recovered from the rear yard where the student was caught, according to police.

Mount Vernon Police Youth Detectives are continuing the investigations. Prosecution is being handled by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. The Mount Vernon Police Intel Unit, Violent Crimes Unit and Wellness, along with the Mount Vernon School District, are working collaboratively to curb youth violence, according to officials.

Police are asking anyone with information about Thursday's incident, or any other instances of illegal weapon possession, to contact the MVPD Detective Division at 914-665-2510. All calls will be kept confidential, according to investigators. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via MVPD "Text-A-Tip" by texting "MVPD" and the tip to 847411. Information can also be sent anonymously through the "Mount Vernon PD" app, available in the Google Play and Apple store.
