2 Unions Seek 70 Apprentices in Painting, Plumbing, AC Mechanics

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Two unions have announced recruitment drives for apprentices in the Hudson Valley. Both are very short. One seeks only apprentices who live in Dutchess, Putnam, Ulster, and Westchester. The other requires people to be able to travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Plumbers, Steamfitters, Refrigeration & AC Mechanics

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local Union #21, Zone 1, will conduct a recruitment from Nov. 27 through Dec. 8, 2017 for 15 plumber & steamfitter apprentices and five refrigeration & air conditioning mechanic apprentices.

Applications must be obtained in person at Local Union #21, 1024 McKinley Street, Peekskill, NY, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applications must be returned in person by 3:30 p.m. Dec. 8, 2017 at Local Union # 21.

Applicants must pay a non-refundable $10 processing fee by cash or money order. Please note: You may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof of completion and grades will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must reside (for at least six months prior to application) within the geographic jurisdiction of Local Union #21, which includes the counties of Dutchess, Putnam, Ulster, and Westchester.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must take an aptitude test administered by the New York State Department of Labor.

Painters, Decorators, Paperhangers

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for District Council #9 will conduct a recruitment from Nov. 30 through Dec. 13, 2017 for 50 painter, decorator, and paperhanger apprentices.

Applications can be obtained, in person only, from District Council #9, 45-15 36th Street, Long Island City, NY, every business day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., during the recruitment period. The sponsor will be distributing 500 applications beginning Nov. 30 and continuing for a period of 10 business days or until all applications have been exhausted, whichever comes first.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work of a painter, decorator, and paperhanger, which includes:
    • Lifting and carrying heavy equipment and buckets weighing up to 70 pounds.
    • Working from ladders, scaffolds, and personal lifts at heights exceeding 100 feet.
    • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Must attend a three-day orientation.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the five boroughs to reach job sites.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a physical examination, at the expense of the Sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
