9 Union Apprentices Sought in the Hudson Valley

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Two regional unions are recruiting apprentices in August. One of them is accepting the first 50 applications for eight positions, to work in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties. The other is for one apprentice only, and applications are restricted to residents in certain towns and counties. One is handing out applications only at the office, the other only online.

Insulation and Asbestos Workers

Union #91's Apprenticeship and Training Committee will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 7 through Aug.18, 2017 for eight insulation and asbestos worker apprentices.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #91, 1024 McKinley St., Peekskill, NY, Monday through Friday from 12 to 4 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. There will be 50 applications available. Applications will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. All applications must be returned to Local Union #91 no later than 4 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2017.
The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a drug test and a medical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass an agility test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.
    • Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 50 lbs. for extended periods.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Working at heights that may exceed 20 feet.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
    • Carrying a 12- foot ladder for a distance of 20 feet and setting it up.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction. Work sites are located in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties.
  • Must purchase tools for use in related instruction and work sites. Tools will cost approximately $50 per year.
  • Must purchase text materials for use in related instruction. Text materials will cost approximately $50 per year.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Elevator Constructors

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Local Union #138 will conduct a limited recruitment from Aug. 4 through Sept. 4, 2017 for one Elevator/Escalator Constructor and Modernizer apprentice.

Please note that the opening listed for an apprentice represents the total number for three recruitment regions - the Capital District, Southern, and Mid-Hudson regions.

Applications are only available online. Applications can be submitted at any time during the recruitment period at the following website: www.neiep.org/careers.aspx. Applicants who do not have access to a computer may visit their local library or a NYS Department of Labor Career Center.

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test with a score of at least 70 out of 100. A $25 testing fee is required on the day of the test. Payment must be in the form of a postal money order or bank certified check. No cash or personal checks will be accepted. Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must attest to being physically capable of performing the work of the trade, which may include lifting, climbing, and working from heights.
  • Must be a resident within the jurisdiction of Local Union #138. This includes the following:
    • Dutchess County
    • Orange County
    • Putnam County
    • Sullivan County
    • Ulster County
    • Rockland County – The town of Stony Point
    • Westchester County – The towns of Bedford, Cortlandt, Lewisboro, Mt. Kisco, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers, and Yorktown.
    • Columbia County – The towns of Ancram, Clermont, Copake, Gallatin, Germantown, Livingston, and Taghkanic.
    • Green County – The towns of Ashland, Catskill, Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington, Rattsville, and Windham.
    • Delaware County – The towns of Andes, Bovina, Colchester, Davenport, Delhi, Harpersfield, Herndon, Kortright, Meredith, Middletown, Roxbury, Hancock, and Stamford.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
  • Must take the National Elevator Industry Educational Program Tool Assessment Test.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
