Building Being Shored Up For Construction Collapses In Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, NY — City officials said there were no serious injuries, despite a catastrophic failure at a construction site.

A building under construction at 16 North Bond St. in Mount Vernon suffered a total structural collapse on Thursday, prompting evacuations, a power shutoff, and a street closure as city agencies moved to secure the area.

The building has been condemned, according to city officials, and neighboring buildings at 14 and 18 North Bond St. were evacuated as a precaution.

No serious injuries have been reported.

According to the city, the property owner obtained permits in December 2025 from the Mount Vernon Buildings Department for structural work on the building. As part of the approved work, workers had begun shoring the structure to stabilize it when the collapse occurred.

Several vehicles parked nearby were also damaged.

City inspectors are conducting interior and exterior structural assessments, including evaluations of the adjoining buildings and roofing systems, to determine when it will be safe for residents to return to the neighboring properties. Power to the affected area has been disconnected as a safety precaution.

The city reported that multiple departments and agencies are involved in the response. Mount Vernon is working with the Building Department, the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management, utility providers and other partner agencies as the investigation into the cause of the collapse as stabilization efforts continue.

The Mount Vernon Department of Public Works is removing debris from North Bond Street, and the property owner has been notified, according to the city. North Bond Street remains closed, between Oak Street and Mount Vernon Avenue, while cleanup operations, debris removal, and structural assessments are completed. Drivers and pedestrians are being urged to avoid the area until further notice.

The city also issued a traffic advisory saying North Bond Street, between Oak Street and Mount Vernon Avenue ,will be closed Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the Department of Public Works completes debris removal and cleanup operations following the collapse. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes and plan for possible delays.
