Lockdown After Shots Fired Near Westchester School

A person of interest was found and taken into custody, according to investigators, who said they expect criminal charges.

YONKERS, NY — Early morning gunfire created some tense moments for a nearby school in Yonkers, police said.

On Wednesday morning, around 7:40 a.m., Yonkers Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Lamartine Avenue and Warburton Avenue.

The officers found ballistic evidence of gunfire at the scene. A suspect vehicle was pulled over by police nearby at the same time, officials said.

A nearby school was placed on precautionary lockdown during the police activity. The school was not named, but the Charter School of Educational Excellence is the closest school to the reported shooting.

Police say the initial investigation found that a suspect discharged a firearm at the location, but there were no resulting injuries or property damage discovered.
