Man Dies After Driving Car Off Train Embankment

The car fell into the cut where the Metro-North tracks go through Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — An elderly man drove off an embankment near the East Mount Vernon train station on Saturday and died. The fatal accident was at 1st Avenue and 1st Street, where the car fell 30-40 feet.

"On behalf of the city of Mount Vernon we extend our condolences to the family," Mayor Richard Thomas said on Facebook.

He also asked Metro-North to fix the bridges across the tracks throughout the city.

Metro-North issued a statement: "The MTA is working with Mount Vernon police to investigate this incident. Metro-North will use the results of the investigation to inform decisions on further enhancing safety improvements that are already planned for Mount Vernon."
