Mount Vernon Detectives Arrest 16-Year-Old for Gun Possession

Police said they were attempting to question the teen in connection with an unrelated home invasion, when he tried to hide the weapon.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon teenager was arrested after being caught with a loaded handgun on Wednesday, police said.

Detectives from the Mount Vernon Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit were patrolling the 200 block of South Third Avenue when they spotted the 16-year-old who was already being sought in connection with a previous home invasion. When detectives approached the teenage suspect, he attempted to conceal an object in his waistband, police said.

The detectives recovered a loaded, 9mm semi-automatic pistol from the suspect, according to police officials.

The teen was taken into custody and arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and he is also facing burglary charges stemming from another case. His identity is not being released by authorities because he is a minor. He has been remanded to a juvenile detention center, pending a court appearance.
