Mount Vernon Man Found In Jersey, Arraigned Over Fatal Shooting
It took nearly three months, but he was tracked down and arrested.
MOUNT VERNON, NY — John Bobbitt, accused of killing Kashawn Smith on Millington Street in April, was arraigned Wednesday morning via video conference in Westchester County Court.
Bobbitt shot the 28-year-old several times at 10:15 p.m. April 28, prosecutors alleged, and then fled the state.
He was found in Newark, New Jersey and arrested there July 13 by members of the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Newark Police Department, Westchester District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced.

The 42-year-old waived extradition and was returned to New York.
Bobbitt and Smith, the nephew of City Councilman Derrick Thompson , knew each other, prosecutors said.

Bobbitt is charged with:
- Murder in the Second Degree, a class A felony
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony
- Menacing in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor
Bobbitt was sent back to jail and is scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 16.
Assistant District Attorney Lana Hochheiser, Deputy Homicide Bureau Chief, and Assistant District Attorney Daniel Flecha, both of the Superior Court Trial Division, are prosecuting the case.
