Mount Vernon Police Make Arrest In Thursday's Fatal Shooting Of Teen

MOUNT VERNON, NY — The Mount Vernon Police Department said an arrest has been made in the killing on Thursday of 18-year-old Tamani Turner.
On Friday, Mount Vernon Police detectives and their law enforcement partners, including the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, arrested 33-year-old Akeem Grant of Mount Vernon for the killing of Tamani Turner.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said she is grateful for the "concerted and conscientious performance of the Mount Vernon Police Department and their law enforcement partners" that led to the arrest.

The Mount Vernon teenager died in the hospital after being shot twice in the torso on Thursday afternoon.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Mount Vernon police were dispatched to Garden Avenue and East 4th Street on a report of shots fired. Officers were also advised that a teenage victim was being taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators reached the victim at the hospital where he was being treated for two gunshot wounds to the torso. Turner was expected to survive, but was listed in critical condition at the time.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tomani Turner, the 18-year-old victim of the shooting incident that occurred on Garden Avenue earlier today," Mount Vernon police said in a statement released late Thursday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tomani Turner during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve the loss of their beloved loved one."
Detectives believe Turner was shot on Garden Avenue just south of East 4th Street.
Mount Vernon detectives from the Violent Crime Unit are continuing to investigate the killing with the assistance of the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.
