Mount Vernon Repairing Priority Potholes
The city hopes to get high-priority patches in as the winter freeze-thaw cycle continues.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — The City of Mount Vernon will be performing significant pothole repairs over the next few days, Mayor Richard Thomas said. Potholes are created by fluctuating cycles of warmer and colder weather and, in many cases, can be attributed to the age of the city’s roads.
The Department of Public Works is prioritizing pothole repair, particularly in advance of coming winter weather, Thomas said. MVDPW prioritizes pothole repairs by several factors including severity of pothole, traffic and volume on street affected. Five (5) crews will be dispatched over the next 48 hours to combat potholes, using a hot asphalt mix.
In 2017, about 8,089 potholes were repaired by MVDPW. Crews will be aggressively repaving roads in the spring greatly improving the durability and resistance of roads to potholes. The city repaved 18 lane miles in 2016 and 23 lane miles in 2017, versus 8 lane miles for the entire 2013-15 period, Thomas said.
