Nellie A. Thornton High School to Host Blood Drive

If more than 35 pints of blood are collected, the student leaders are awarded an academic scholarship from the American Red Cross.

WHAT: Nellie A. Thornton has partnered with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive open to Mount Vernon City School District students, the local community, and surrounding area.

WHY: Nellie A. Thornton High School has worked in partnership with the American Red Cross for more than 10 years to host one to three blood drives each year. Anyone age 16 or older is eligible to donate blood; 16- and 17-year-olds need a parent’s signature in order to donate. Each year, two seniors are selected from the AVID and National Honor Society classes to increase awareness of and run the blood drive. If more than 35 pints of blood are collected through the blood drive, the students are awarded an academic scholarship from the American Red Cross to split.
