Sentencing for Man who Killed Passenger Smashing into Cross County Parkway Bridge

He was barely injured in the crash.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty announced that Hasani Ewan of Mount Vernon was sentenced Thursday to one to three years in state prison after having pled guilty on April 28, 2016 to one count of Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a class “D” Felony in the death of Eloise Spears.

According to county police, Ewan was driving eastbound on the Cross County Parkway when his 2001 Honda Accord left the roadway and struck a bridge abutment to the Seminary Avenue pedestrian bridge.

When police arrived, Ewan was outside the car and appeared to be in an agitated state. Officers noted that Ewan’s eyes were glassy and that he staggered whenhe walked. They also detected the smell of alcohol on his breath and the smell of marijuana coming from his clothing.

Spears, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ewan suffered a cut to the face from the accident and was taken to Westchester Medical Center. Upon his arrival he was placed under arrest and advised of his DWI warnings.

After sentencing, Ewan was remanded into the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections.
