Shots Fired Near Gun Violence Awareness Event, Shooter At Large

MOUNT VERNON, NY — An event dedicated to raising awareness about gun violence was marred by gunshots as the weekend got underway.

The Mount Vernon Police Department said that shots were fired on Friday in the area of 6th Ave. and 4th St., and that police are investigating.

Police officers were already present in the area, for a gun violence awareness event outside the Doles Center, when they observed and heard gunshots. They immediately pursued the suspect. However, the suspect managed to get away.

No victims have been reported, and there is no evidence of property damage from the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the MVPD Detective Division at 914-665-2510. Police say all calls will be kept confidential. Anonymous tips can also be sent via MVPD's "Text-A-Tip" by texting "MVPD" and the tip to 847411. Information can also be sent anonymously using the "Mount Vernon PD" app, available in the Google Play and Apple stores.
