Strong Thunderstorms: Work Week Weather for Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Take a deep breath and then batten down the hatches — drenching rain approaches. Monday we get a break from thunderstorms. But that won't last.

"A slow-moving front will pull plentiful tropical moisture northward from the Gulf Coast early in the week," AccuWeather Meteorologist Ed Vallee said.

The rain will be beneficial, as the Hudson Valley remains in dry to drought conditions.

Here is the work week forecast from the National Weather Service for southern Westchester County:

• Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Northwest wind around 7 mph.
• Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
• Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Light south wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
• Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 7pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75. South wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
• Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. West wind 10 to 13 mph.
• Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70.
• Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.
