Suicidal Jumper Lands On Bystander Killing Both: Police

A 25-year-old man jumped off the roof of a building, falling 12 stories and landing on a 61-year-old man, Yonkers police said.

YONKERS, NY — A 61-year-old man was killed when a 25-year-old who jumped from a downtown structure landed on him.

Yonkers police are investigating an apparent suicide at a residential tower at 77 Locust Hill Ave, known as Cromwell Towers. Investigators believe that a distraught 25-year-old man jumped off the roof of the building, falling twelve stories onto the concrete parking garage roof below and striking a 61-year-old man.

Both men died at the scene, according to police officials.

Detectives said they are interviewing witnesses and family members, as well as reviewing surveillance video. The incident appears to be a tragic situation and the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

"The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Police Department offers its sincere condolences to the families of both men," police said in a statement announcing the deaths.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, if you or someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide:

  • Do not leave the person alone.
  • Remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.
  • Call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255).
  • Take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
