Unemployment Rate Ticks Down Locally, Statewide

MOUNT VERNON, NY — New York's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased a fraction from 5.2 percent to 5.1 percent in November 2016, according to new data from the New York State Department of Labor.

The state's private sector job count increased by 100,900 from November 2015 to November 2016 to 7,950,000. The state's private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers and is conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics.

At the local level, lower and mid-Hudson Valley counties also saw a fractional decrease in unemployment rate from November 2015 to November 2016, with the Dutchess-Putnam area going down from 4 percent to 3.9; the Kingston area, 4.3 percent to 4.1; and Orange-Rockland-Westchester, 4.1 percent to 4 percent.

In this region, Columbia County continues to maintain one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state.

In fact, Columbia County was joined by Dutchess, Putnam and Rockland on the list of 10 counties with the lowest unemployment rates in November 2016:

• Saratoga County (3.6%)
• Nassau County (3.7%)
• Albany County (3.8%)
• Putnam County (3.8%)
• Dutchess County (3.9%)
• Rensselaer County (4.0%)

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
