YONKERS, NY — Yonkers police released security footage of a brazen gunpoint robbery, captured on Monday and announced they have a suspect in custody.

The hair-raising mugging took place in the stairwell of a New Main Street apartment building just after midnight on Boxing Day. The suspect, 44-year-old homeless man, David Melendez, has been charged in connection to this robbery and another robbery on Elliot Avenue in the city.

"Everybody deserves to be safe when they go home at night, especially right after Christmas, but unfortunately there are criminals like David Melendez, 44-years-old and homeless, who prey on our neighbors," police officials said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "But fortunately, our Yonkers Police Officers and Detectives are committed to locking up violent actors like David, who was charged with two counts of Robbery 1 in relation to this incident on New Main Street and another on Elliott Avenue; identified and apprehended in less than three days."
