Yonkers Police Warn Of Con Artists Targeting Hispanic Immigrants
The confidence scheme preys on recent immigrants by offering a chance to share in a lottery win, but there is no jackpot in the end.
YONKERS, NY — The Yonkers Police Department warned on Sunday that they have received several reports of scam artists targeting members of the Hispanic immigrant community.
The scammers have been approaching unsuspecting victims with the promise of sharing in a big lottery prize if they hand over a down payment to secure legal services or act as collateral (or variations thereof), according to police.
The con artists may walk the victim to different store fronts as part of the deception, such as a bank, law office or professional building, and after convincing the victim to hand over cash or jewelry, the scammers disappear for good.
