
The Rockland County Chapter of the National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI)-FAMILYA and the Rockland Independent Living Center in New City, NY will sponsor a free class for parents of children and adolescents with mental, emotional and/or behavioral challenges begining Tuesday Evening, October 2, 2012. NAMI Basics is a free 6 week class that provides learning and practical insights for families. The class is taught by trained parents who have lived similar experiences with their own children. Course elements include:
- The trauma of emotional disorders for the child and family
- The biology of mental/emotional disorders: getting an accurate diagnosis
- The latest research on the medical aspects of the illness and advances in treatment
- An overview of treatment options
- The impact of a child's illness on the rest of the family-caregivers and siblings
- An overview of the systems involved in caring for children and teens
