Nanuet Granddad Falls Victim to Green Dot Scam, Loses $2,000
Clarkstown police warn residents against accepting demands for money over the phone.

On September 12, 2014 at 4:40 PM, the Clarkstown Police Department responded to a call of possible fraud. The victim, male, 82, of Nanuet, stated that he had received a call from a man stating that he was the victim’s grandson. The unknown caller told the victim that he was arrested in Las Vegas and needed money for bail.
The caller instructed the victim to purchase Green Dot Cards, from a CVS Pharmacy, with $500 put on each card. After the victim purchased the cards, the victim called the suspect and supplied him with the card information, allowing the suspect to access the funds on the cards.
Thankfully the scam was stopped by a family member and the victim’s losses were limited to $2,000.

This is another case of suspects calling elderly citizens and demanding them to purchase Green Dot money cards in order to defraud them of their funds.
The Clarkstown Police Department is asking that the general public be extremely cautious in accepting demands for money over the phone.
