Hudson Valley Alzheimer's Association December Programs

The Alzheimer's Associate will offer several programs for people who suffer from dementia along with their caretakers starting December 12.

From The Alzheimer's Association of Hudson Valley: The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter has several programs scheduled in Rockland County in the weeks ahead.

“Understanding and responding to dementia-related behavior,” will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at Meals on Wheels at 121 W. Nyack Road in Nanuet. This program explores how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s and offers tips on how to decode the behavioral and verbal messages delivered by someone with dementia. It also offers strategies on how to connect and communicate at every stage of the disease. This program includes a complimentary lunch; call Debra Kagan-Birkeland at 845.639.6776.

Part three of “Living with Alzheimer’s for early-stage caregivers,” will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15 at Suffern Public Library in Suffern. This program answers questions that arise after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and suggestions for coping with the changes involved. Call Debra Kagan-Birkeland at 845.649.6776 with questions or to RSVP.

A “Virtual Dementia Tour” will be offered in 30-minute sessions from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Meals on Wheels, 121 W. Nyack Road in Nanuet. The program simulates dementia symptoms to help caregivers identify and cope with the behaviors and needs of someone with dementia. Call Jody Addeo at 845.639.6776 to make an appointment.

A “Memory Café” for people with early-stage dementia and their family caregivers to socialize and enjoy some food and music will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, in a private dining room at City Line Family Restaurant at 254 S. Main St., New City. Preregistration is required; call Debra Kagan-Birkeland at 845.639.6776 with questions or to RSVP.
