Incident Was Miscommunication, Not Luring: Orangetown Police

Miscommunication between a bus driver and a Nanuet High School student led to a police investigation Oct. 21.

NANUET, NY — An incident reported to Orangetown police as suspicious was due only to miscommunication, police said. A small white unmarked bus pulled up beside a Nanuet High School senior on her way to school at about 8 a.m. Monday.

She was near the intersection of Somerset Drive and Middletown Road when the bus pulled up. It was was driven by a woman, and a man on it was dressed in a green crossing vest.

The girl was asked by both repeatedly if she needed a ride to Rockland Community College, according to police. The man got off the bus and told her it was her last chance to get on. When the student refused, the bus drove away.

She got to school and reported it as suspicious.

Police investigation revealed the vehicle was Transport of Rockland bus No. 93 and that it was being operated by a substitute driver.

"The incident was a miscommunication and not an attempted luring incident," police said in a press update.
