Nanuet Woman Faces 34 Animal Cruelty Charges

There were 14 cats in a house deemed uninhabitable.

NANUET, NY — A Nanuet woman faces 34 counts of animal-cruelty related charges. Magdeline Gruner, 66, was arrested after Rockland County officials went to her home at 136 North Pascack Road to enforce a court order which had deemed the residence uninhabitable.

The charges, which relate to the condition of 14 cats found in the home, fall under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law:

  • Six counts of violating Section 353 (cruelty to animals) a class A misdemeanor
  • 14 counts of violating Section 355 (abandonment of animals) an unclassified
  • misdemeanor.
  • 14 counts of violating Section 356 (failure to provide food and drink to
  • animals) an unclassified misdemeanor.

The Sheriff’s Office contacted the Hudson Valley Humane Society after discovering the cats. They were who safely removed and examined and treated by licensed veterinarians.

On Sept. 27 Gruner turned herself in at Rockland County Sheriff’s Headquarters in New City where she was arrested and processed on the above charges. If convicted, Gruner will be placed on the county Animal Abuse Registry, which is maintained by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office.
