📰 News we're reading
• City of Elmira 'susceptible to fiscal stress,' state comptroller says (stargazette.com) — New Hempstead is again singled out in the state's fiscal stress report, this time with a very high score of 86.7 that places the village among New York's most financially strained communities. While Elmira is the main focus, the comparison underscores how serious New Hempstead's budget pressures are and why state officials say many upstate municipalities need structural changes.
• Town of Kent designated as fiscally stressed (midhudsonnews.com) — New Hempstead is among a handful of New York municipalities flagged in the state comptroller's latest report as being in the highest "significant stress" category, signaling serious fiscal trouble. The report, focused on Kent and other cities, highlights how rising costs, inflation, and waning pandemic aid are straining local budgets across the state, including right here in Rockland County.
