Amazon Rainforest Leaders & Scientists Gather to Save Amazon

HUDSON YARDS, NEW YORK -

Leaders from the indigenous territory of the Xingu in Brazil’s southern Amazon and scientists gathered to raise support and funding for the preservation of the Amazon rainforest from deforestation. The event called Amazon Hope took place at a modern art gallery called Affirmation Arts in Hudson Yards, New York City on Friday, October 11. Through presentations and a public reception for an art exhibit, Amazon Hope aimed to raise donated funds and public awareness about the ecological issues of the Xingu region where wildfires are some of the worst in the Amazon. As wildfires in the Amazon increase, the event aimed to strengthen a partnership between indigenous groups, scientists and artists to save the jungle and the culture of its native people through conservation methods involving technology.

At the event, participants announced planned conservation methods including giving locals in the Xingu territory tools to monitor wildlife destruction and digitally archiving the history of native groups to safeguard it. Amazon Hope also looked to crowd-fund to establish in the Kuikuro indigenous community of the Xingu information technology and training resources. At Affirmation Arts, Kuikuro members also sold hand-made traditional jewelry from the Xingu.

Pennywise Foundation, an organization that makes grants, sponsors creative collaboration with non-governmental organizations and offers them technical assistance, arranged Amazon Hope.
