Mayor Mamdani Fires NYC Sheriff, Appoints Replacement: What To Know (patch.com) — New Yorkers are seeing a major shakeup in city law enforcement leadership as Mayor Zohran Mamdani removes NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda and appoints former NYPD lieutenant Edwin Raymond to the role. Raymond, a longtime Brooklyn-based officer and recent liaison in the state Attorney General’s office, is praised by Mamdani as a principled reformer focused on accountability and public trust.    

2. NYC Restaurants Ordered Closed May 22 - 29 (patch.com) — If you eat out in New York City, recent Health Department inspections may change where you dine. Several restaurants in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx were temporarily closed between May 22 and 29 for serious violations, including vermin, poor handwashing facilities, and unsafe food temperatures, highlighting ongoing concerns about food safety across the five boroughs.    

3. 5 Injured After Train Fire At Penn Station, Some Rail Service Still Affected (patch.com) — Commuters in New York City faced major disruptions after a two-alarm train fire at Penn Station injured five people and halted or delayed Amtrak, NJ Transit, and Long Island Rail Road service. FDNY brought the blaze under control before the morning rush, but Amtrak and NJ Transit routes between New York and New Jersey remain suspended until at least Friday afternoon.    

4. JFK Airport to screen passengers from certain countries for Ebola (wkrn.com) — Travelers arriving at JFK Airport in New York City from Ebola-affected countries are now being screened under new CDC-directed protocols that took effect at midnight Friday. The move follows a growing Ebola outbreak in parts of Congo and Uganda, and aims to catch potential cases early by monitoring passengers for symptoms and recent exposure risks.    

5. Broadway Producers to Gather at The Penn Club for Tony Awards Strategy Panel (broadwayworld.com) — Broadway insiders will gather at the Penn Club of New York in Midtown Manhattan on June 8 for a members-only panel dissecting the business of Broadway and Tony Awards campaigns. Producers and communications experts will discuss investment, marketing, and fundraising strategies for commercial theater, offering a focused look at how shows are financed and promoted in New York’s theater industry.
