B4B NYC: The 5 Best Bang-for-Your-Buck Events in New York City This Weekend
The Patch Culture Hound picks 5 of the most interesting (and affordable!) adventures in NYC this weekend, Aug. 19 through Aug. 21.

NEW YORK, NY — Do you feel that first crisp autumn chill in the air? The one that says, Oh, goody, sweater weather is right around the corner? Yeah, neither do we. It's still hot as balls out there, and the idea of putting on a sweater right now? We just can't.
But what's a little heat to us culture vultures, right? Just pop on an extra Che Guevara under our Keep Calm and Carry On (you know, to mop up the sweat) and remain as still as possible until the show starts!
As luck would have it, New York City is simply chock-a-block with cool and fun and ONE-TIME-ONLY events this weekend. And, as always, B4B NYC is here to tip you off to five of the very coolest and funnest ones — in every price range.

Heat still getting you down? Hey, just remember: In Meemaw's day, they wore petticoats and hose and all that nonsense in the same kind of heat. So you hush your mouth, pretty baby.
BEACH SESSIONS: LAURIE BERG AND BOOMERANG

Find out what's happening in New York Cityfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
Where: The beach at 86th Street, Rockaway, Queens [map]
When: Saturday, 8/20, 6:30 p.m.
What: The Rockaways are pretty much the bangin' culture hang this summer — obviously, someone realized the Atlantic Ocean is the perfect scenic backdrop for art events, great and small. This weekend proves the point all over again with the first of two Beach Sessions: free weekend double bills from four NYC-based choreographers, right out there on a little stage-upon-the-sea. This weekend's double bill pairs Laurie Berg's "The Mineralogy of Objects" — a piece performed by four women and a blow-up doll — with Boomerang's "Repercussion," a pas de deux set to beats from Deerhoof founding member Greg Saunier. More information here.
How much: FREE! (But you're invited to stay late for an organized beach cleanup!)
PILL, POP. 1280, B BOYS, FUTURE PUNX

Pictured: Pill
Where: Park Church Co-Op, Greenpoint [map]
When: Friday, 8/19, 8 p.m.
What: We all need to admit something out loud right now, together: We haven't danced to a saxophone in way, way too long. There, doesn't that feel better? And lucky us, 'cause like, now's our chance and stuff — thanks to the Brooklyn-based band Pill, an excellent, post-punk foursome who will be rocking a sweet (s)ax in support of their new LP "Convenience" this Friday night at the Park Church Co-Op. (Yes, this band is loud. And yes, we too are waiting for some genius to invent the next genre to replace "post-punk.") Adding plenty of filé to this gumbo is an entirely sick lineup, including Pop. 1280 and B Boys and Pill's Dull Tools label-mates, the so-fun, totally bopping "post-wave" Future Punx, whom it is highly recommended you do not miss. More information and tickets here.
How much: Tickets $8 (or $10 at the door)
RETURN OF THE DOUBLE FEATURE: VERTIGO AND REAR WINDOW

Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in Vertigo (1958)
Where: Film Forum, West Village [map]
When: Friday, 8/19, Vertigo at 12:30 p.m., 5:10 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.; Rear Window at 3 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
What: Starting this weekend and running through Sept. 13 is Film Forum's "Return of the Double Feature" festival, which recalls the Golden Age of Hollywood by pairing two classic movies together for one low price. The inaugural offering — running all day and evening Friday — is the can't-miss double feature of Hitchcock classics Vertigo and Rear Window, both starring the peerless Jimmy Stewart in two of his most beloved roles. Frankly, it's hard to pick which of these movies is the A feature, and fittingly, that's how the whole thing works anyway: Film Forum alternates the films in the same theater throughout the day, and ticket holders just stay in their seats for two in a row, no matter which comes first! More information and tickets here.
How much: Tickets are an incredible $14 for both movies (and only $8 for Film Forum members)
BREWS, BBQ & BEATS AT ROCKAWAY BREWING CO.

Where: Rockaway Brewing Company, Long Island City [map]
When: Sunday, 8/21, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
What: Queens-based promoter Queen of Astoria is back with a full six hours of drinking and dancing Sunday at Rockaway Brewing Company — which, yes, is oddly located in Long Island City, although the company did recently "return to its roots" by opening a new tasting room out at the beach. Twenty-five bucks gets you pork products from John Brown Smokehouse and hip-hop spins from deejays Primo and JFuse. And of course, since the event is, you know, at a brewery, there will be (very good) beer. (Pro tip: Should you wish to taste brews from LOTS of local companies, you might also want to swing by the Beergarden at North Brooklyn Farms on Saturday.) But for more information and tickets for the Rockaway Brewery thing, go here.
How much: Tickets are $25
TAKE ME HOME: A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR WEST VIRGINIA

Where: Joe's Pub, East Village [map]
When: Sunday, 8/21, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
What: Sometimes you just have to take your hat off to the bars of New York City — not many places can pull a night like this out of their ass just, you know, whenevs. Remember back in June, when flooding devastated parts of West Virginia? Well, I'll tell you someone who does remember: Tony-winner and West Virginia native Michael Cerveris, star of Fun Home. Now, just because he can, Cerveris has thrown together Take Me Home, a one-night-only concert of mountain music this Sunday that will benefit West Virginia Red Cross. He'll perform with his band Loose Cattle alongside New York- and West Virginia-based artists such as Laura Cantrell, Nellie McKay and the Carpenter Ants, among many others. More information and tickets here.
How much: Tickets are $25, plus drinks (and dinner, if you want!)
And last but not least, a ...
GET-'EM-WHILE-THEY'RE-HOT ALERT!
REGINA SPEKTOR

Where: Town Hall, Theater District [map]
When: Monday, 10/27, 8 p.m.
What: Everyone's favorite singing waif, Regina Spektor, will play Manhattan's Town Hall on Monday, Oct. 27 — and if you're reading this, you're wasting valuable seconds you could instead use trying to get through to Ticketmaster, where tickets go on sale Friday, 8/19, at noon. If you're a fan of Orange is the New Black or own every She & Him album — or just love that signature faux-baby female vocal style that's poisoned seasoned all indie music since the early-aughts — this one's for you! (We kid, we kid.) More information and tickets here.
How much: Tickets are $65 and up (good luck!!)
