Juilliard presents The New Series | Juilliard Pride Songbook, Vol. 3 at Juilliard's Paul Hall on Sunday, May 3 at 3pm.
The annual event celebrates Juilliard's vibrant community, honoring the music of LGBTQIA+ composers over generations.
While June is Pride Month, the New Series artistic director David Serkin Ludwig conceived the Pride Songbook to uplift Juilliard's LGBTQIA+ community during the academic year. Each year, New Series organizers commission compositions from Juilliard alumni and other community members, inviting current students to perform them alongside iconic works by Juilliard composers.
This year’s Songbook features the music of noted Juilliard alumni and faculty, including Young Concert Artists composer in residence and alum Alistair Coleman, who sets his commissioned piece to the poems of Lorca. Juilliard Orchestra and AXIOM competition winner Vincent Zhang and alum Joy Redmond, whose one-act opera debuted at the Kennedy Center, premiere new works on the Paul Hall stage. The program also features pieces by the celebrated neo-romantic art song composer Ned Rorem, as well as a selection of Bob Dylan’s poems set to music by Pulitzer-winning composer and Juilliard faculty member John Corigliano.
The expansive program continues a conversation between LGBTQIA+ composers of the past and into the present, as current community members carry on a powerful musical legacy in this performance.
