NEW YORK, NY – Hosting daily news conferences, visiting new coronavirus testing sites, advocating for aggressive public health strategies – many Americans are turning to one man for guidance and reassurance during this public health crisis.

And they're urging him to upset the 2020 Democratic presidential race.

Based on the no holds barred public health crisis actions New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has taken over the past few weeks, many Americans are asking him to put his name on the ballot as the party's nominee – potentially shaking up what had become a two-horse race between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

The hashtag #CuomoforPresident has been trending on Twitter as users started sharing reactions to Cuomo's news conferences. From Chelsea Handler to Mark Ruffalo to Mia Farrow, celebrities have praised his leadership

Even New Yorkers who previously did not support Cuomo's policies and decisions came out to back his coronavirus response.

Cuomo's most widely-shared comments came during a news conference on Tuesday and were in reaction to the suggestion by Texas' lieutenant governor that older people – effectively 1-2 percent of the population – would not mind dying to save the economy.

“My mother is not expendable, your mother is not expendable and our brothers and sisters are not expendable, and we’re not going to accept the premise that human life is disposable, and we’re not going to put a dollar figure on human life. The first order of business is to save lives, period. Whatever it costs,” Cuomo said.

For some, simply stating the facts was enough of a relief.

On Wednesday, Cuomo announced the state had established a mental health hotline for free emotional support, consultation and referral to a provider.

The announcement generated a lot of positive responses online, including from mental health and addiction advocate and former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy.

And then, there are some who have started referring to Cuomo as their "boyfriend," thanks to his work in response to the public health crisis.

Last week, Jezebel posted a piece by Rebecca Fishbein about how she has developed a Stockholm Syndrome-like crush on Cuomo. She then followed up with a piece about how Cuomo called her after reading her article.

For those pushing the Cuomo 2020 ballot, it's worth remembering that he reportedly did consider running for president, but ultimately did not throw his hat into the ring.
