Electric Governors Island Ferry Plan Gets $7.5M Boost

The new, electrified public ferry is anticipated to begin service in summer 2024.

NEW YORK CITY — A ferry ride to Governors Island is about to get more electrifying, thanks to a $7.5 million federal grant, officials said.

Mayor Eric Adams announced the grant Friday and said it will help the city's plan to electrify the public ferry to the island in New York Harbor by next summer.

The grant to support a new rapid charging station is part of more than $10 million combined in federal funding, which includes $3 million for the Staten Island Ferry, he said.

The Governors Island ferry will offer hybrid-electric service starting in summer 2024, officials said.
