FDNY Firefighter Won't Survive 20-Foot Fall, Will Donate Organs: Mayor
Firefighter William P. Moon II suffered a critical head injury during a training exercise, officials said.

NEW YORK CITY — An FDNY firefighter won't survive a head injury he suffered from a 20-foot fall during a training exercise this week, officials said.
The family of Firefighter William P. Moon II decided to donate his organs after it became clear Friday morning that his head injury was likely fatal, city officials said.
Mayor Eric Adams, during a Friday news conference, called Moon a hero twice over.

"He spent 21 years saving the lives of his fellow New Yorkers, and he will continue to save lives in his passing," Adams said.
Moon's fall unfolded Monday morning as he prepared for a drill in Rescue Company 2's firehouse in Brownsville, Brooklyn, said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.

He fell about 20 feet from a ladder and suffered a serious head injury, Kavanagh said. Other firefighters rushed to help Moon and took him to Kings County Hospital, where after several days it became clear his head injury would be fatal, she said.
Kavanagh said department officials are investigating what led to the fall.
“We are looking into that, and we will have more details,” she said.
Moon spent much of his career in Queens, but transferred to the elite Rescue 2 this year, officials said.
He also worked as a volunteer firefighter and was the former chief of department in Islip, where he lived, officials said.
