Flu Vaccinations In NYC Amid Coronavirus Outpace Last Year
More than 706,000 New Yorkers received a flu shot this season, a 37 percent increase over the same point in 2019, officials said.
NEW YORK CITY — Looks like New York City’s flu vaccination efforts got a real shot in the arm thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 706,000 New Yorkers took doctors’ advice, rolled up their sleeves and took a stab against influenza this season, city health officials revealed Wednesday. Those flu vaccination numbers covering July through Oct. 24 count as a 37 percent increase over the same point last year.
It’s good news for health and city officials worried that a rough flu season could overburden hospitals bracing for a second wave of coronavirus.

“This year could be the most important flu vaccine you ever get,” said Dave Chokshi, the city’s health commissioner, in a statement. “Now is the perfect time to get the vaccine if you haven’t yet. Our friends, families and neighbors are counting on all of us to help keep each other safe.”
At least 1.2 million city dwellers have received this year’s flu vaccine, according to a release. Health officials hope to boost the numbers even higher as flu season — which typically last from late fall to spring — looms and the coronavirus pandemic threatens a resurgence.

This year’s flu vaccine contains four virus strains, three of which are new this year, a release states. Doctors say the vaccine is safe, reduces the chances of getting influenza and, if someone does get the flu, helps prevent severe complications.
They recommend it for all New Yorkers over 6 months in age.
The flu vaccine is available across the city, often for free or at reduced prices. The city Health Department’s NYC Health Map provides vaccination locations, as does a call to 311, or text of FLU to 877-877.
