NEW YORK — Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for the new coronavirus while in prison, according to multiple reports, including NBC citing confirmation from the head of the New York state corrections officers union.

The news of his positive coronavirus test was first reported by the Niagara Gazette on Sunday.

Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault at the Wende Correctional Facility in western New York. He has been at the facility since March 19.

The convicted rapist and disgraced movie mogul tested positive for the virus while at Wende, Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, told NBC Monday morning.

Additionally, before his arrival at federal prison, Weinstein was held in Rikers Island Jail, where there have now been more than 35 coronavirus cases confirmed among inmates at the facility.

A Manhattan jury found Weinstein guilty on Feb. 24 of raping an actress in a Midtown hotel in 2013 and sexually assaulting a former production assistant at his Manhattan apartment in 2006. The jury did not find Weinstein guilty of the highest charge, though, predatory sexual assault.

Patch placed multiple calls to the New York Department of Correction's Office of Public Information to confirm Weinstein's diagnosis but received no answer.

Weinstein is 68 and suffers from a variety of health issues including heart problems, high blood pressure and diabetes. All of which are factors that put him a greater risk of serious illness from the coronavirus.
