Harvey Weinstein Sues Lawyers Over Dismissed Criminal Charge

NEW YORK CITY — Disgraced Hollywood producer and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein has a new project: suing his attorneys over a dismissed criminal charge.

Weinstein isn't necessarily unhappy about the dropped charge, but instead a side effect from it — namely, the loss of his insurance coverage at a loss of $1 million.

In a civil complaint filed Monday in New York City, Weinstein claims his lawyers at Abelson Herron Halpern LLP failed to tell him his insurance could be terminated.

"By reason of the foregoing, Weinstein suffered substantial monetary damages in the sum of not less than $1,000,000," the complaint states.

Representatives for the firm and Michael Bruce Abelson, an attorney listed as a defendant, didn't return requests for comment.

Weinstein once stood atop Hollywood after producing Oscar-winning films such as "Shakespeare In Love." But now Weinstein wallows in disgrace after the New York Times and New Yorker helped launched the "Me Too" movement with their reports detailing years of sexual misconduct accusations made by some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Manhattan prosecutors booked him on rape charges in 2018, setting off a high-profile criminal case and trial.

The unnamed dismissed charge cited in the recent civil suit stems from that criminal case, which ended with Weinstein's 2020 conviction on rape charges.

Weinstein is currently in a Los Angeles jail as he faces 11 felony counts in California on accusations of rape and sexual assault.
