NEW YORK CITY — Remnants of Hurricane Ida likely will make for two days of very wet weather in New York City, meteorologists predict.

The city will remain under a flash flood watch until Thursday at 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Ida, which hit Louisiana as a powerful hurricane, has weakened to a tropical low swollen with moisture, the flood watch states. Heavy rain showers are likely Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

"A widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain is forecast with locally higher amounts likely," the watch states. "This rainfall combined with wet antecedent conditions will likely lead to flash flooding."

Emergency management officials issued a travel advisory for Wednesday, warning that some spots could get up to 8 inches of rain.

“New York City Emergency Management is in contact with the National Weather Service to prepare for any potential impacts to the city caused by remnants of Tropical Storm Ida,” John Scrivani, the city's emergency management commissioner, said. “New Yorkers should take time to prepare and take the appropriate precautions if they must move about the city during the storm.”

New York City has been no stranger to recent wet weather.

Tropical Storm Henri hit Aug. 21 and gave the city its rainiest hour in recorded history. Back in July, roads and subways flooded as another major storm hit the city.

The Ida-tinged forecast predicts the heaviest rain showers will arrive late Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.
