Labor Day 2017: What's Open, Closed In New York City
Wondering what's going to be open and closed in New York City on Labor Day? Patch has you covered.

NEW YORK CITY — Get to the beach and wear your white pants this weekend because Labor Day — celebrated each year on the first Monday of September — is rapidly approaching. Labor Day, the unofficial marker of the end of Summer, can be a confusing holiday. Unlike Christmas, New Year's or July 4 it can be tough to tell what's going to be open and closed
Because Labor Day is a federal holiday you can count on many government buildings to be closed, but when it comes to private businesses, libraries, schools and city services such as public transportation and trash pickup things get tricky. Not sure what's going to be open or closed? Don't worry, Patch has you covered.

City Government: City Government offices will be closed. City courts will also be closed.
The DMV: All New York State Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed.
NYC Parks department: All Parks Department recreation centers will be closed Monday.
Federal Government Offices: All federal government offices will be closed.
Postal service: No mail delivery, and all post offices will be closed.
Parking: Labor Day is one of the Department of Transportation's "major legal holidays." As a result alternate side of the street parking and meter enforcement is suspended.
Garbage collection: The city Department of Sanitation will not make collections on Labor Day. If Monday is normally your day for trash pickup, put out your trash after 4 p.m. If Monday is usually your day for recycling, you will have to wait until next week for pickup.
Street cleaning: The city Department of Sanitation will not perform street cleaning on Labor Day.
Schools: New York City Public Schools are closed for the summer until Sept. 7. For private and charter schools, make sure to call your school to confirm holidays.
Banks: Most banks will be closed. Call ahead to be sure. The New York Stock Exchange will also be shut down on Labor Day. Million-dollar traders are technically "laborers" too, you know.
Libraries: Branches of the New York Public Library (Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx) and the Brooklyn Public Library will be closed from Sept. 2 to Sept. 4 for the Labor Day Weekend. Queens Public Library branches are closed solely on Labor Day.
The MTA: This summer it seems the MTA has been on a constant holiday, but the MTA is making special service changes for the Labor Day weekend. MTA New York City Transit subways and buses and MTA Bus Company buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.
But there are a few extra changes:
- The Clark Street Tunnel Closure service plan will be in effect, and 2/3 service will be suspended in Brooklyn. 4 service will be extended to New Lots Av to replace the 3, and 5 service will be extended to Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College to replace the 2.
- Because of the J’Ouvert Parade on Monday, September 4, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Brooklyn, the Church Av 5 station will be closed and bypassed from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Monday, September 4. Buses in the area will be rerouted.
- Because of the West Indian-American Day Parade on Monday, September 4, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, certain subway entrances in the parade area may be affected and buses in the area will be rerouted. The Eastern Pakwy-Brooklyn Museum 2/5 station will be closed and bypassed from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Monday, September 4. At Crown Hts-Utica Av 4 station, certain staircases will be designated entrance/exit only. Additional service will be provided on the 4 line between 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., and 4/5 trains will make all local stops in Brooklyn.
In addition to changes on subways and buses, the MTA is upping service on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad:
- On Friday, September 1, the LIRR will offer nine extra afternoon trains from Penn Station and Jamaica, and Metro-North will offer 17 extra afternoon trains departing Grand Central Terminal.
