Locals Pray and Celebrate on Eid al-Adha
Locals Muslims commemorated one of the biggest days of celebration on the Islamic calendar at Washington Square Park.
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK —
On a cool summer morning in Washington Square Park, Manhattan, hundreds of local Muslims prayed on Eid al-Adha on Sunday, August 11. The annual tradition is one of the biggest days of celebration on the Muslim calendar as it marks the final stages of the Hajj pilgrimage. The Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia which hosts millions of people annually is from 8/9 to 8/14 this year.
Eid al-Adha is a festival honoring prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to kill Issac to show his devotion to God. The ceremony is one of two major festivals each year following Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy month of fasting on Ramadan.

At Washington Square Park, following a panel of speakers and morning prayers, local attendees broke for brunch. The Islamic Center at New York University organized the event.
