NEW YORK CITY — Devastation from the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit New Yorkers hard, regardless of their immigration status.

But in the days and weeks after the storm, undocumented New Yorkers found themselves at risk of being left behind in relief efforts.

That changed Monday as Gov. Kathy Hochul and an assortment of local leaders unveiled a $27 million fund to help the undocumented recover from the storm.

“We’re at war with Mother Nature sometimes, and we don’t leave anybody on the battlefield,” Hochul said.

The announcement dovetails with Mayor Bill de Blasio's commitment to take steps to address the effects of severe, climate change-fueled storms.

De Blasio thanked Hochul for working with the city to set up the Ida fund, which is funded by $20 million of state money and $7 million from the city.

Hochul said the fund will offer up to $72,000 to victims. The limit for housing assistance is $36,000, and the same amount for other needs, she said.

The program is managed by the state's Office for New Americans. Affected people can call 1-800-566-7636 for assistance, which will be distributed by the following local organizations:
