NEW YORK CITY — Grab a raincoat, dress in layers and prepare to dodge lightning, New Yorkers.

A cold front blowing into the city Tuesday is expected to bring rain and a chance of isolated thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms prompted forecasters to issue a hazardous weather outlook for the city effective all Tuesday.

"Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon and evening hours as a cold front passes through the area," the outlook states.

The potential storms would be the first since Mayor Bill de Blasio outlined a plan to prepare for severe, climate change-fueled weather.

De Blasio said the city will create its own forecasting office and alert system to prepare more detailed warnings than those available from the National Weather Service.

Until then, the service's Tuesday forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain, with showers and a potential thunderstorm after 3 p.m.

The high during the day will hit 75 degrees, but drop to 57 degrees at night, according to the forecast. Temperatures will stay below 70 degrees through the week.
