NYC Hospital Safety Grades: See The Best And The Worst

New York City hospitals didn't fare well.

NEW YORK, NY — There's an old saying that if your leg gets chopped off in Brooklyn, you should walk to Manhattan for treatment. In reality, perhaps you should stumble on until you reach New Jersey.

In a new batch of hospital safety rankings released Tuesday by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit founded by employers and healthcare providers, only four of 43 New York City hospitals achieved higher than a "C" grade.

The city failed to earn an "A" grade for a single hospital and the number of "B" grades dropped compared to Leapfrog's spring 2017 rankings. The number of "C," "D" and "F" grades went up. In total, four hospitals got a grade of "B," 26 got a grade of "C," 10 got a grade of "D" and three got a grade of "F."

Of the 15 total hospitals in Leapfrog's national rankings that scored an "F," 20 percent can be found in New York City. This fall's failing-grade New York City hospitals are Interfaith Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn and Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island.

The poor rankings for New York City are consistent with the state as a whole. New York was one of only six states (plus Washington D.C.) to have a hospital with an "F" grade and was tied with North Dakota, Washington D.C., Delaware and Maryland for the lowest percentage of "A" ranked hospitals.

Leapfrog looks at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections when calculating its grades, according to the ranking methodology. The grades are calculated by "top patient safety experts" and are peer reviewed before release, according to Leapfrog.

The goal of the rankings is to determine a patient's risk of further injury or infection if they visit a certain hospital.

"Errors and infections in hospitals are the third leading cause of death in America and people deserve to know which of their hospitals are best at preventing them," Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog, said in a statement.
